Cannabidiol (CBD) products are incredibly popular in the U.S. for their purported ability to naturally relieve anxiety and inflammation, and improve sleep. We recently published our highly-requested best CBD oil review, and we wanted to publish a separate review of CBD gummies to help consumers make informed and healthy choices.
Selecting a high-quality CBD gummies brand is even more challenging than choosing a good CBD oil brand, because gummies often contain additives like high quantities of processed sugar and flavoring agents that are unhealthy.
Our goal with this article is to provide a clear set of criteria that consumers can use to evaluate CBD gummies brands, and then recommend several CBD gummy products.
What Matters When Comparing CBD Gummies Products
One of the three criteria we consider when recommending a product is whether the brand publishes laboratory test results proving their product is safe and accurately labeled. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. routinely recalls products for quality control and safety violations, and since there is no pre-approval process for dietary supplements the only way to ensure the safety of a CBD gummy product is to see test results.
When we analyze test results, we’re ideally looking for potency data (proving the amount of CBD on the label is actually in the product), label accuracy data (proving that all ingredients listed in the product are actually in the product – this matters less for CBD products where there’s typically only one active ingredient), and contaminant data (proving that contaminants like pesticides and heavy metals are not present in unsafe concentrations).
Our second consideration is a clean formulation, and as stated in the intro section this is especially important for CBD gummies because they’re often laden with sugar.
We typically recommend products without added sugar at all, but since every CBD gummy brand we reviewed contains added sugar (or artificial sweeteners which are even worse), we are instead recommending products with the lowest levels of added sugar. If sugar-free CBD products with clean formulations launch in the future we will update this article and recommend them.
The price is our third consideration, because obviously all things being equal, a product with a lower price is more favorable for consumers than one with a higher price. Because CBD dosage varies so much between brands and products, we will standardize the price in this review per 10 milligrams (mg) of CBD.
We will only recommend products which reasonably satisfy these three benchmark criteria.
Best Overall - Bluebird Botanicals CBD Gummies
Bluebird Botanicals is typically our top-recommended CBD brand because of their commitment to extensive lab testing that we outlined in our Bluebird Botanicals reviews article, as well as their business ethics.
Their CBD gummies pass our lab testing requirement, because their Batch Database indicates that their recent batch of CBD gummies contains the required amount of CBD and has non-detectable levels of contaminants like mycotoxins, pesticides and heavy metals.
Bluebird Botanicals CBD gummies pass the clean formulation test because most of their flavoring agents are organic whole foods, including organic pear juice concentrate and fruit and vegetable juice. Their formulation only contains 2 grams (g) of added sugar which is lower than most competitors.
We want to note that this product contains the additive ingredients citric acid and natural flavors which we don’t typically recommend, but because every single CBD gummy brand we reviewed contains these ingredients we’re grading the clean formulation on a relative scale. We hope in the future CBD gummy brands emerge with no added sugars, natural flavors or flavor enhancers like citric acid.
Our goal is to guide consumers to the cleanest products in every supplement category. If the average product in a category like gummies is relatively unhealthy, our goal is to guide consumers to the healthiest option.
The price of Bluebird Botanicals CBD gummies is $44.95 for a jar which contains 450 mg total. This equates to $1 per 10 mg serving of CBD.
Bluebird Botanicals CBD gummies are a full-spectrum hemp extract, which means it may contain low levels of all cannabinoids including THC. This suggests consumers subject to drug testing may wish to choose a CBD isolate or broad-spectrum CBD gummy instead, which are free of THC.
Best CBD Isolate Gummies - FabCBD
FabCBD is a CBD isolate gummy, which means it’s free of all cannabinoids except for CBD. This makes it a good option for consumers who get drug tested or who otherwise react poorly to other cannabinoids.
FabCBD publishes lab reports on their website. These reports indicate their product contains no heavy metal or pesticide contamination. They do not test for residual solvents, which makes their testing data slightly inferior to Bluebird Botanicals’.
It’s also notable that while FabCBD lists 25 mg of CBD per serving of their gummies, their potency testing shows 21 mg, so this is the dose we will use in our price comparison.
These gummies have a clean formulation relative to other CBD gummies brands. They use organic ingredients like organic black carrot juice and organic turmeric for coloring. Some of their sweetness comes from organic grape juice concentrate rather than added sugar. This product also contains the lowest level of added sugars of the CBD gummies brands we reviewed, with only 1 g per serving.
The price of FabCBD CBD gummies is $59 for 630 mg total of CBD, which equates to $0.94 per 10-mg CBD dose, which is slightly better than Bluebird Botanicals pricing on a unit basis.
Best Tasting CBD Gummies - Upstate Elevator Supply Co.
Upstate Elevator Supply Co. is based in Vermont and makes CBD gummies that are quite affordable. We found these to taste the best out of all of the CBD gummies we tried.
This brand does publish lab reports, but they appear to only test for potency at least for their gummy products. This means their lab reports verify the quantity of CBD, but not the levels (or lack thereof) of contaminants like heavy metals or pesticides.
According to their website, the hemp that’s used to produce these gummies is grown on a sustainable and regenerative farm in Vermont. CBD products tend to have lower levels of contaminants than herbal supplements like ashwagandha which are often grown in countries with high levels of environmental pollution. This means we don’t find any risk of contamination likely with this brand, but the lack of published contaminant testing data makes their testing process inferior to that of Bluebird Botanicals or FabCBD in our opinion.
Upstate Elevator Supply Co’s CBD gummies have a slightly worse formulation than the two brands reviewed above from a health perspective. One gummy contains 5 g of added sugar, and this product also contains citric acid and natural flavors which we usually recommend avoiding.
One positive of this brand’s formulation is that all of the botanical ingredients come from organic sources, which is proven in medical research to carry fewer pesticides on average.
Upstate Elevator Supply Co. performs well on price. Their CBD gummies contain 30 mg CBD each, for a total of 900 mg per jar. This equates to $0.78 per 10 mg serving, which is around 20% cheaper than the other brands we’ve reviewed thus far.
Cheapest CBD Gummies - CBDistillery
We reviewed this brand favorably in our CBD oil review for their CBD oil isolate, and this time we’re reviewing their gummies. This is a broad-spectrum CBD product, which means it contains all cannabinoids other than THC. Some consumers prefer the effects of this type of product to a full-spectrum extract which contains THC or a CBD isolate which contains only CBD.
CBDistillery’s broad-spectrum CBD gummies are extensively lab tested for potency, label accuracy and a wide range of contaminants. The test results are published right on the product page, and the number of criteria tested puts this brand on par with Bluebird Botanicals in terms of product testing.
The formulation of this product is similar to the other CBD products reviewed: a relatively simple formulation but it does contain natural flavors and citric acid. This brand of gummies only contains 2 g added sugar, which is a low amount per serving for a gummy product.
The price of CBDistillery’s gummies is $60 for a jar that contains 900 mg CBD. This equates to $0.67 per 10 mg serving which is the cheapest price we found for a brand that also meets our lab testing and formulation criteria. This product is 33% cheaper than Bluebird Botanicals’ gummies.
Why We Don’t Recommend Sugar-Free CBD Gummies
We searched for a sugar-free CBD gummy brand to recommend, but couldn’t find a single one without harmful artificial sweeteners and other filler ingredients. We’re surprised that a brand hasn’t formulated a clean sugar-free CBD gummy product with second-generation sweeteners like stevia extract or monk fruit extract that would make for a clean formulation and sweet taste without sugar.
We believe that a small amount of added sugar is safer and healthier than artificial sweeteners, so we don’t recommend any sugar-free CBD gummy products at this time.
