Versed Skincare Review: Does Vegan Skincare Work?

Versed Skincare is both affordable and well-branded, which isn’t a common combination in our experience. The brand describes its product line as “Vegan, Cruelty-Free and Clean Skincare.”

But does Versed use research-backed ingredients for improving skin? Does the brand use any unhealthy ingredients? And is Versed better or worse than popular vegan skincare brands like Truly Beauty?

In this article we’ll answer all of these questions and more, as we analyze the ingredients in one of Versed’s most popular products (Dew Point) to give our take on whether or not it’s effectively formulated.

We'll also compare Versed Skincare to other popular vegan skincare brands in terms of formulation quality to pick our winners (and losers).

Key takeaways:

  • Moisturizer contains many research-backed active ingredients
  • Contains two preservatives we consider potentially unhealthy
  • We do not currently recommend Versed Skincare

Dew Point Ingredient Analysis

The ingredients in Versed Skincare Dew Point Gel-Cream Moisturizer are shown below:

Versed Skincare Dew Point Gel-Cream Moisturizer ingredients list

This cream contains a number of research-backed ingredients.

Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, better known as aloe vera, was shown in a 2009 medical review to have skin-healing properties.

Camellia sinensis leaf extract, otherwise known as tea leaf extract, is a potent natural moisturizer, as we discussed in our Proven Skincare review.

Jojoba and glycerin may have synergistic effects, which means they can be more effective when combined than in isolation.

A clinical trial published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that these two ingredients improve skin moisture content when used together.

Sodium hyaluronate is a well-studied anti-aging ingredient.

It’s the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, which is clinically shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Due to its lower molecular weight, sodium hyaluronate can penetrate deeper into the skin.

While this cream has a number of research-backed ingredients, it contains two ingredients that we consider potentially unhealthy.

Sodium hydroxide is a preservative that may be irritating to the skin, according to a 1990 clinical trial.

Phenoxyethanol is another preservative that was shown to be toxic to human cells in a clinical trial published in the Experimental Eye Research journal.

Overall, we consider Versed Drew Point likely to be an effective moisturizer, however we don’t currently recommend this product due to the two preservatives highlighted above.

Versed Skincare vs. Vegan Skincare

Here's how Versed Skincare compares to other popular vegan skincare brands in terms of formulation quality, in our opinion:

Tula Skincare

Contains Blue 1, a synthetic dye which is clinically shown to cause hypersensitivity reactions in some individuals.

Versed Skincare is the healthier option.

Winner: Versed Skincare

Truly Beauty

Contains fragrance and synthetic dyes.

Both of these compounds are significantly more unhealthy than anything in Versed Skincare, as we documented in our Truly Beauty reviews article.

Winner: Versed Skincare

Dermalogica

Like Versed, this brand uses a few inactive ingredients we consider to be mildly unhealthy.

The Versed Skincare formulation we analyzed contained many more research-backed ingredients, so we give Versed the advantage from a potential effectiveness standpoint.

Winner: Versed Skincare

Our Clean Skincare Pick

MindBodyGreen Best Skin+ is our top anti-aging skin supplement.

It contains orange extract which is clinically shown to increase skin moisturization, skin elasticity and skin radiance.

This supplement also contains astaxanthin which is clinically shown to cause "wrinkle formation reduction."

This supplement is free of ingredients that we consider to be unhealthy.

Conclusion

We consider Versed Skincare to be a good brand for its price point.

We reviewed the formulation of the brand’s daily facial cream called Dew Point and we don’t currently recommend it due to the inclusion of two preservative ingredients, but we do consider it likely to be effective as a skin moisturizer.

Most of the online customer reviews on Versed that we came across while researching this article were positive.

Versed highlights the fact that their products are vegan in their marketing, but the vast majority of skincare products that we’ve reviewed on Illuminate Health to date are vegan.

It’s somewhat uncommon to include animal products in cosmetic formulations.

We consider Versed Skincare more likely to be effective than Dermalogica, and to offer healthier formulations than vegan skincare brands Tula and Truly Beauty.
