Rugiet is a men’s health brand that sells erectile dysfunction (ED) medications that they claim have a unique formulation. Their products are pharmaceutical, so an online prescription (which the brand appears to facilitate) is required.

In this article we’ll analyze the ingredients and dosage of Rugiet based on published medical studies to give our take on whether it’s likely to be effective for treating ED, as well as how the formulation compares to other popular ED meds like Viagra and Bluechew.

Ingredient Review

Rugiet contains three active ingredients: sildenafil, tadalafil and APO.

The first two active ingredients are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat ED, and are the active ingredients in other popular ED treatments such as Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil).

Both ingredients are backed by significant research. A medical review published in the Drugs journal examined data from many individual clinical trials on sildenafil. The researchers found that the drug improved erection hardness, duration of erections and ability to have sex.

A similar meta-study from 2019 analyzed whether tadalafil was effective for treating ED, and the study authors concluded that it was. The drug significantly improved erectile function on average.

Some online retailers like blue chew sell generic versions of both medications, which are proven to be as effective as the brand-name versions but are often significantly cheaper.

Apomorphone (APO) is an interesting active ingredient for an ED formulation, and not one we’ve reviewed on Illuminate Health previously. A medical review published in the Urologia Internationalis journal examined the effectiveness of APO for treating ED. The study authors documented that the medication successfully caused erections and improved nerve function in the penis while aroused.

The researchers in the above-linked study noted the following about APO: “The most favorable risk/benefit ratio is seen with a dose-optimization regimen of 2–3 mg.” The APO doses available on Rugiet’s site are 2 milligrams (mg) and 3 mg so this ingredient appears effectively dosed.

All three of the ingredients in Rugiet have significant research backing, and we consider this an effective formulation. That doesn’t mean that it will work for all patients, just that it’s likely to work on average.

Our Research Concerns

While the three active ingredients in Rugiet are backed by impressive clinical research individually, we cannot identify any medical trials testing their efficacy and safety in combination. This safety consideration is serious in our opinion, given that these are pharmaceutical drug ingredients.

One clinical trial published in 2015 examined the safety of tadalafil and sildenafil long-term when taken in combination. The reported side effects were relatively mild: flushing, headache, upset stomach and muscle pain. The researchers noted no difference between the group taking the drugs and the group taking placebo, which suggests that this combination is safe and side-effect-free.

We cannot find any trials evaluating the safety of sildenafil, tadalafil and APO combined. Ingredients which are proven to be safe individually can sometimes have dangerous synergies, which is why thorough safety testing of drug ingredients and combinations is so important.

While we don’t consider this combination likely to cause harm, we cannot recommend it given that it doesn’t appear to have been proven safe in medical trials. Further, we can’t locate any information on Rugiet’s website proving these active ingredients are safe when taken in combination. If they have this information, we suggest they publish it clearly or link to it on the homepage of their site.

It’s also notable that Rugiet has a sublingual product, meaning it dissolves under the tongue and is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream (they mention this information frequently in their marketing materials). This means that even if the active ingredient combination in their product was proven safe and effective in capsule form, there would still be a research gap proving it to be safe and effective in sublingual form.

Questions About Additive Ingredients

We cannot find a full ingredients list published on Rugiet’s site. The brand shares information about the three active ingredients, and perhaps these are the only ingredients in their formulation, but the brand describes their product as having a “great taste” and “tasting like a breath mint.”

Pharmaceutical ingredients do not typically taste great on their own, which is why inactive ingredients like flavoring are often added to the drug formulation.

If Rugiet has inactive ingredients like flavoring agents to create this minty taste, the brand should be publishing that information transparently on their site. It’s important for consumer safety to share information about added ingredients, because patients may have allergies or aversions to certain ingredients.

Our Recommendation

We would recommend that patients suffering from ED speak with their doctor about prescription treatments that have been approved by the FDA in their entirety. While some of the individual ingredients in Rugiet have been approved by the FDA for treating ED, it doesn’t appear that their custom formulation has.

ED is very well managed by drugs like Viagra and Cialis, which have been proven safe and effective in many research trials.

While Rugiet may theoretically be more effective than single-ingredient ED meds like Viagra, we cannot recommend it or believe so until we see clinical research backing proving so.

Peak Performance for Men is a noninvasive medical procedure using shockwaves that can cause significant improvements for ED, and may be worth considering. We reviewed the treatment in the linked article, and were impressed by its established efficacy.

Rugiet Pros and Cons

Here’s our view of the pros and cons of this innovative ED treatment:

Pros

  • Likely to be effective
  • May be more potent than leading ED meds

Cons

  • Lacking research backing
  • Lacking safety data
  • Questions over added ingredients

Conclusion

Based on the ingredients and their component doses, we do believe Rugiet is likely to be effective. However, we don’t recommend using this product because we can’t find any safety data proving that the active ingredients at the doses used are safe when taken in combination.

ED is one of the conditions that is typically well treated by pharmaceutical intervention, and we believe it’s more logical for patients to speak with their doctor about established ED medications like Viagra or Cialis with extensive safety data.

There are also medical procedures that patients suffering from severe ED can consider, such as Peak Performance for Men which uses shockwaves to treat ED.

We’re concerned that Rugiet may have inactive ingredients like flavoring agents and colorants that the brand is not highlighting on their website, and we urge the brand to publish a clear ingredients label including both active and inactive (if any exist) ingredients.
