Peptiva Review: Can Probiotics Improve Sleep?

Peptiva Review: Can Probiotics Improve Sleep?

| |
| |

Peptiva is a sleep supplement that's sold by a company called Adaptive Health. The supplement contains probiotics, which is unique for a sleep supplement, and the brand claims customers can "Restore Balance As You Sleep With Peptiva!"

But does Peptiva contain research-backed ingredients for sleep support, or is this just a marketing claim? Does the supplement contain any questionable additives? How do real users rate and describe the effects of Peptiva? And which retailer sells this supplement for the best price?

In this article we’ll answer all of these questions and more as we analyze every ingredient in Peptiva based on medical studies to give our take on whether or not the supplement is likely to be effective for improving sleep quality.

Because this supplement contains many active ingredients, we’ll break our ingredient analysis down into three sections: Probiotics, Other Active Ingredients, and Inactive Ingredients.

We'll also feature unsponsored customer reviews, and provide a cost comparison to show which retailer sells Peptiva for the best price.

Probiotic Ingredient Analysis

Peptiva probiotic ingredients

Most of the ingredients in Peptiva are probiotics. The supplement provides a total probiotic dose of 26 billion colony-forming units (CFU).

Four of the included probiotic strains are of the Lactobacillus species, including Lactobacillus acidophilus (ATCC SD6865) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (ATCC SD6866). We cannot identify any medical research suggesting that Lactobacillus probiotics are effective for improving sleep quality.

In fact, a medical review published in the Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine journal searched for studies suggesting that Lactobacillus probiotics were effective for supporting sleep, but the study authors couldn't find any.

The two other species of probiotics included in this formulation are Bifidobacterium strains, and again we cannot identify any medical studies suggesting them to be effective for sleep.

Peptiva cites no clinical studies on their website’s product page showing any of these probiotic ingredients to be effective, so we have no reason to believe that this blend supports optimal sleep.

Other Active Ingredient Analysis

Peptiva other active ingredients

Peptiva contains three other active ingredients: gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), valerian extract and melatonin.

GABA appears to be an effective ingredient for enhancing sleep.

A medical review published in the Frontiers in Neuroscience journal analyzed data from 14 clinical trials on GABA and sleep, and concluded the following: “doses ranging between 100 and 300 mg seems to be efficacious in reducing sleep latency with prolonged use of 1–4 weeks.”

The GABA dose in Peptiva is 100 milligrams (mg) so we’ll consider this an effective ingredient and dose.

Melatonin is one of the most well studied and safe ingredients for enhancing sleep quality and reducing time-to-sleep as we discussed in our review of Relaxium, another sleep supplement.

The 1.5 mg total melatonin dose in Peptiva is effective based on a meta-study published in 2019, which documented the therapeutic dosing range as 1 mg to 6 mg.

Valerian extract is another research-backed sleep enhancer, but may be underdosed in Peptiva.

A meta-study analyzed data on valerian extract and sleep from 16 clinical trials. The researchers found the supplement to be effective, but the minimum dose used in any of the trials was 225 mg daily. Peptiva contains only 50 mg.

Overall, we consider this blend to be effective for supporting optimal sleep quality.

Inactive Ingredient Analysis

Peptiva inactive ingredients

The inactive ingredients in Peptiva are shown above.

Carrot concentrate is a natural colorant that's a much healthier option than artificial dye in our opinion.

The majority of inactive ingredients in this formulation are safe and non-toxic, however there is one ingredient we typically recommend consumers avoid.

Titanium dioxide is used for its white color, but this ingredient is banned in the EU for use as a food additive due to concerns over genotoxicity. This means that this additive can potentially damage DNA.

The dose of titanium dioxide in Peptiva is almost certainly very low, but it seems reasonable to avoid this ingredient entirely.

Does Peptiva Cause Side Effects?

Peptiva doesn't appear to have been studied in any clinical trials, which makes it more challenging to assess whether or not the supplement will cause side effects.

However, we can make an educated guess based on its active ingredients.

GABA has a favorable safety profile, but changes in its levels "are involved in the development of numerous neuropsychiatric disorders" according to a medical review published in the Current Pharmaceutical Design journal.

This does not necessarily prove that GABA supplementation has this effect, as it could be merely correlative (meaning that changes in GABA levels may be caused by the development of psych disorders rather than the reverse effect).

That being said, it seems reasonable to speak with a doctor before regularly supplementing with GABA.

Melatonin is clinically shown to cause daytime drowsiness in some individuals, as we documented in our Night Shred review article, but we consider this effect unlikely at the dose in Peptiva.

Overall, we consider Peptiva unlikely to cause side effects in otherwise healthy adults.

On the brand's FAQ page, they report that "there are no known side effects."

Our Clean Sleep Picks

There are sleep products with ingredients and materials clinically shown to improve sleep quality.

Sleep Mode from Bulletproof is our top sleep supplement pick.

It contains melatonin which is arguably the most well-studied sleep inducer, along with l-ornithine which is an amino acid that's clinically shown to reduce cortisol and improve sleep quality at the same dose as in Sleep Mode.

Interested consumers can check out Sleep Mode at this link to the product page on Bulletproof's official website, where it currently retails for under $30.

Nolah Weighted Bamboo Blanket is a great option for consumers who prefer non-supplement solutions for sleep. Weighted blankets are clinically shown to improve sleep quality in both older adults and in children, and early research suggests they may also reduce anxiety.

Interested consumers can check out Nolah Weighted Bamboo Blanket at this link to the product page on the official brand website, where it’s currently retailing for under $100.

Manta Sleep Mask is the most cost-effective sleep solution, because it’s only $35 and will last for years. A 2021 clinical trial found that eye mask and ear plug use improved sleep quality in ICU patients. Manta’s mask comes with ear plugs.

We can't locate any medical studies on sleep mask use in healthy patients, but it seems logical that the same effects would hold given that light exposure during sleep negatively impacts sleep quality.

Interested consumers can check out Manta Sleep Mask at this link to the product page on the official brand website.

Real Customers Review Peptiva

Amazon is a better resource for honest customer reviews than a brand's website in our opinion.

Peptiva has been reviewed over 3,000 times on Amazon, and has an average review rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars.

The top positive review from a verified purchaser comes from a user named “Linda M.” who gives the product a 5/5 star rating and claims it's effective:

“The product does what it is advertised to do ! I was hesitant about the claims in the advertising but decided to take a chance , not much of a chance since it was free for a 15 day trial . I did not hesitate to order after the first week. You will be happy after trying!”

The top negative review from a verified purchaser is written by a user named “vicelia k” who gives the product a 1/5 star rating and suggests it's ineffective:

“I started taking this product over a week ago, and since then I wake up every 3 hrs for no reason. I was under the impression that I would have a continuous improvement of sleeping, but do not!”

Peptiva currently has a 2.1 out of 5 star rating on Facebook, which is one of the worst average Facebook ratings we've ever reported in an Illuminate Health review.

Peptiva has an average review rating of 1.04 out of 5 stars on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website, which is quite a low rating given that the lowest-possible rating is 1 out of 5 stars.

The company does respond to the majority of customer complaints which is a sign of a high-quality brand.

Peptiva Sleep Support has an average rating of 3.9 out of 5 stars on Google.

Conclusion

Peptiva is a decently-formulated sleep supplement that we consider likely to improve sleep quality because it contains two effectively-dosed active ingredients (GABA and melatonin).

However, we don’t currently recommend this supplement because it contains titanium dioxide, and because we can't find any clinical evidence that any of the probiotics in Peptiva support optimal sleep (nor does the brand cite any evidence on their product page proving such).

While GABA has been associated with mood disorders in at least one medical review, it's too early-stage to suggest that supplementation with this compound causes those disorders.

We do not consider Peptiva likely to cause side effects in otherwise healthy individuals, and the brand's website states that the supplement is not known to cause side effects.
