Welleco Review: Is Super Elixir Healthy or Not?

Welleco is a supplement brand that sells powders marketed a variety of health benefits. The company describes its product line as "plant-based, vegan supplements made with superfoods."

But does Welleco contain research-backed ingredients for the stated health benefits? Does the company use any unhealthy ingredients? Is their Super Elixir the healthiest green powder on the market? And is Welleco better or worse than popular supplement brands like Athletic Greens?

In this article we'll answer all of these questions and more, as we analyze the ingredients in Welleco's most popular supplement (Super Elixir) to give our take on whether or not it's likely to support optimal health.

We'll also compare Welleco to other popular supplement brands like Athletic Greens to pick our winners.

Key takeaways:

  • Main ingredients are highly nutritious
  • Contains two ingredients we consider unhealthy
  • We do not currently recommend Welleco

Welleco Super Elixir Review

The ingredients in the unflavored version of Welleco Super Elixir are shown below:

Welleco Super Elixir Unflavored ingredients list

We give the company credit for including the concentration of all major ingredients, which is uncommonly transparent for a green powder supplement.

Barley grass is included at the highest concentration, and removes toxins from cells according to a review published in the Oxidative Medicine & Cellular Longevity journal.

Wheat grass is one of the most nutritious whole foods available, as we discussed in our l'evate you reviews article.

Alfalfa leaf was described as a "nutraceutical" in a 2017 medical review due to its high protein and mineral content.

The most concentrated ingredients in this formulation are nutritious whole foods.

However, there are some ingredients we consider questionable from a health perspective.

Carotene powder is included, and this isolated antioxidant had "potential harmful effects on [cardiovascular] mortality" according to a meta-analysis published in the Nutrients journal.

The effect size was relatively low, but we prefer obtaining this compound from whole foods like carrots.

Other vitamins and minerals like zinc gluconate and biotin are included at unlisted doses in this ingredient list.

Green tea extract is included at an unspecified dose in the ingredient list, and this ingredient is clinically shown to harm the liver at high doses.

Overall, we consider Welleco Super Elixir to be nutrient-dense, but we do not currently recommend this supplement due to the inclusion of carotene powder and green tea extract at an unspecified dose.

Welleco vs. AG1

AG1 by Athletic Greens is one of the most popular green powder supplements in the US, so health-conscious consumers are often curious about which supplement has a better formulation.

In our view, AG1 is the healthier option because it's free from green tea extract and carotene powder.

While we do not currently recommend AG1 due to one inactive ingredient, as we documented in our is Athletic Greens a scam article, we consider this ingredient to be of lower concern than the two ingredients discussed above.

AG1 is also clinically shown to be effective at supporting optimal gut health in independent trials published in peer-reviewed journals, which is the gold standard of product research.

We cannot identify any clinical trials on Welleco.

Our Clean Green Powder Picks

Starwest Botanicals Organic Green Powder is our top overall green powder pick.

All of its ingredients are organic and nutrient-dense, and it contains ingredients like wheat grass and moringa leaf that the average consumer probably doesn't get in their diet.

Pique Japanese Sencha Green Tea is our top superfood green powder pick.

Green tea was documented in a medical review to support "anti-hypertensive effect, body weight control, antibacterial and antivirasic activity, solar ultraviolet protection, bone mineral density increase."

Both of the products recommended in this section are free of ingredients we consider to be unhealthy.

Welleco vs. Popular Green Powders

Here's how Welleco compares to other popular green powder supplements in terms of formulation quality, in our opinion:

Bloom Nutrition

Lower total ingredient dose but healthier formulation given the lack of questionable active ingredients

Winner: Bloom Nutrition

Field of Greens

Also contains green tea extract but in an even more concerning capacity.

At the time of our analysis of this product, there was a label warning about green tea extract but the ingredient did not exist in the ingredients list, as we documented in our Field of Greens review article.

Winner: Welleco

Ghost Greens

Contains a probiotic strain which is clinically shown to support optimal cholesterol metabolism and the cardiovascular system.

Contains one inactive ingredient we consider unhealthy, but like in the case of AG1, we consider this less of an issue than the two ingredients we called out in Welleco Super Elixir.

Winner: Ghost Greens

Welleco Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • High total dose of green powder
  • Concentration of major ingredients listed
  • Two most-concentrated active ingredients are highly nutritious
  • No unhealthy flavoring additives
  • May support overall nutrition

Cons:

  • Green tea extract at unspecified dose
  • Carotene powder may increase cancer risk
  • Contains synthetic vitamin additives
  • Doesn't appear clinically tested

Conclusion

Welleco Super Elixir is formulated with some highly nutritious ingredients.

In fact, the two ingredients with the highest concentrations are both clinically shown to support optimal health in humans.

We like the choice of main ingredients by Welleco, but we disagree with the choice to include carotene powder and green tea extract, both of which may have negative health effects in some cases.

We do not currently recommend Welleco Super Elixir (the brand's green powder supplement) due to the inclusion of these two ingredients.

We consider Welleco to be healthier than Field of Greens, but inferior from a formulation perspective to AG1 by Athletic Greens, Bloom Nutrition and Ghost Greens.
