Biossance is an award-winning clean skincare brand that sells products for anti-aging, hydration, skin repair and more. The brand claims that their products can help users “kick fine lines to the curb.”

But do Biossance products contain ingredients proven in medical studies to reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging or are these just marketing claims? Do the products contain any questionable additive ingredients? What retailer has Biossance for the best price? And how do real users rate and describe the effects of this brand?

In this article we’ll answer all of these questions and more as we analyze the ingredients in two of Biossance’s most popular products based on clinical research to give our take on whether or not they’re likely to be effective. We’ll review the brand’s eye cream and sunscreen.

We’ll also provide a price comparison highlighting the cheapest place to buy Biossance products, and share customer reviews of the brand.

Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream Review

Biossance Eye Cream ingredients

One of Biossance’s best sellers is the brand’s eye cream. Its ingredients are shown above, and there are a number of effective ingredients in this product.

Squalane is one of the first-listed active ingredients, and many Biossance products feature this ingredient. A medical review published in the Molecules journal reports that squalane has hydrating properties when applied to skin.

Jojoba esters and glycerin are an effective combination. A clinical trial published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that these two ingredients have a synergistic effect and increase the moisture content of skin.

Sodium hyaluronate is one of the most well-studied anti-aging ingredients, and as we referenced in our review of K-beauty brand Depology, this ingredient is clinically shown to reduce wrinkles.

Tocopherol, or vitamin E, was shown in a medical review to reduce skin damage due to UV exposure.

Astaxanthin is a chemical compound typically derived from fish (it gives salmon its pink color) which was shown in a medical review published in the Nutrients journal to significantly reduce wrinkle depth and also to have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Clearly there are a number of effective ingredients in this product. There is also one that health-conscious consumers may wish to avoid.

Phenoxyethanol is a synthetic preservative shown to be toxic to human cells in a 2020 clinical trial. This was a test tube study so it doesn’t necessarily mean the same results apply when this compound is used topically.

Overall we consider this cream to be likely effective for reducing visible signs of aging due to its multitude of research-backed ingredients. We don’t currently recommend it due to the inclusion of phenoxyethanol.

A doctor with a YouTube channel called “Doctor Anne” reviewed this eye cream and shared her thoughts on whether or not it was effective for her, along with what skin types she’d recommend it for:

Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Review

Biossance sunscreen ingredients

The ingredients in Biossance’s sunscreen are shown above.

Zinc oxide is the active sunscreen ingredient, and is a safe and non-toxic choice. A medical review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science found that zinc oxide is effective at blocking UV rays and does not absorb into the body.

As we documented in our review of Supergoop Sunscreen, many sunscreen brands contain ingredients shown in medical studies to be hormone-disrupting and toxic, so the choice to use zinc oxide as the active ingredient already makes this a better-than-average sunscreen.

Ethyl ferulate is another ingredient in this formulation with research backing for its sunscreen effect. A meta-study published in the Molecules journal found that this ingredient protects the skin from UV rays and is also an anti-inflammatory.

We are unable to identify any other ingredients in this product that can improve skin quality, but we consider Biossance’s sunscreen to be likely effective for the protection of skin from the sun. Unfortunately it contains phenoxyethanol or we would consider recommending it.

A TikTok creator named Tanupa did a live product demonstration to show that there is no white cast from the product, and claims she’s happy with the texture and the product overall in the video description:

@tanupaskincare @biossance truly impressed with the texture :) #skincare #sunscreen #mineral ♬ Open - Khalid feat. Majid Jordan

Real Biossance Customer Reviews

Amazon is a better resource for honest customer reviews than a brand’s website in our opinion. Biossance’s most-reviewed product on Amazon is the sunscreen we analyzed in the previous section. It’s been reviewed over 1,000 times on Amazon with an average review rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars.

The top positive review from a verified purchaser comes from a user named “Susana Heimann” who claims the product didn’t cause skin irritation like previous sunscreens had:

“Sunblock has always been a problem for me - but not this one. I started using it when I got to Thailand which is very close to the equator so the sun is strong as well as hot. It never sensitized my skin, it went on smoothly and evenly without clogging my pores and it really kept the sun at bay — no burning(my tendency) or redness.”

The top negative review from a verified purchaser is written by a user named “Dunny” who dislikes the consistency of the larger product:

“I tried the travel size first, and loved it, it was so thick, you had to give tube a good squeeze to get it out. Then I bought the $34 size and it is VERY WATERED DOWN, so much so it squirts out by it self, without squeezing the tube. Very unhappy about this and will attempt to get money back or a proper replacement”

Stay up-to-date on our research reviews

Biossance is a high-quality skincare brand. We consider this brand to be slightly better than the average skincare brand we’ve reviewed on Illuminate Health.

The eye cream sold by Biossance contains a large number of effective ingredients. While we don’t recommend it due to a synthetic preservative, we do consider it likely to have an anti-aging effect.

The brand’s sunscreen is likely to be effective for UV protection and we consider it a much safer choice than chemical sunscreen, because it uses zinc oxide as the active ingredient which is entirely non-toxic. We do not currently recommend this product either due to the same preservative ingredient.

Online reviews of Biossance are mostly favorable, and for consumers intent on purchasing from this brand, we recommend doing so on Amazon because the products are significantly cheaper there at the time of publishing this article.
