Truvy Review: FDA Crackdowns and Metabolism Pills

Truvy is a wellness brand that sells a variety of dietary supplements, and is most popular for their weight loss supplements. The brand describes itself as "Your Whole Health Sidekick."

But do Truvy supplements contain research-backed ingredients for weight loss? Does the brand use any unhealthy ingredients? Why was the company subject to an FDA recall in 2023? And is Truvy better or worse than popular weight loss supplements like Nugenix Thermo?

In this article we'll answer all of these questions and more, as we share our concerns about the lack of ingredient disclosures in Truvy's weight loss supplement duo TW&E and truFIX.

We'll also explain why the FDA required Truvy to recall some of its supplements from the market in 2023, discuss the risk of side effects, and compare Truvy to other popular weight loss brands to pick our winners (and losers).

Key takeaways:

  • FDA found unapproved drug ingredients in Truvy
  • Supplements contain inactive ingredients we consider unhealthy
  • We do not currently recommend Truvy

Unapproved Drugs Found in Truvy

In 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of 12 different Truvy supplements due to inclusion of unapproved drug ingredients.

According to the above-linked announcement, certain Truvy supplements contained unapproved ingredients hordenine and/or octodrine/DMHA.

These ingredients can cause side effects such as high blood pressure, nausea and vomiting.

Whether or not these ingredients were intentionally added, this is a serious consumer safety issue, and we recommend that consumers avoid this brand entirely.

In 2017, Truvy (which was previously named TruVision Health LLC and appears to have rebranded) received a warning letter from the FDA detailing "serious violations" of Good Manufacturing Practice.

The letter details the following: "the products have been prepared, packed, or held under conditions that do not meet CGMP requirements for dietary supplements."

The agency also found that Truvy was making claims of efficacy on their website that were not approved.

Further, the FDA Warning Letter states that several Truvy supplements were misbranded and that the serving size information was incorrect.

This level of laxity about consumer safety and quality control is entirely unacceptable.

Total Lack of Ingredient Disclosures

At the time of updating this article, Truvy's new weight loss blend is a two-product bundle called Truvy TW&E and truFIX.

There are no ingredients listed on the product page or in the product images, which is a serious consumer safety issue.

Without the ingredients listed, consumers have no idea what they're buying, and whether or not it's safe.

Truvy's previous formulations included Supplement Facts panels which were published on product pages, and we urge the brand to do the same for this new product launch.

We very strongly recommend that consumers avoid supplements without ingredients clearly published on the brand's product page.

Truvy vs. Popular Weight Loss Brands

Here's how Truvy compares to other popular weight loss products in terms of potential effectiveness and safety, in our opinion:

Nugenix Thermo

While this weight loss supplement contains some research-backed active ingredients, one of them is clinically shown to cause liver injury in some cases.

That being said, that risk is low, and at least Nugenix Thermo has a clearly-published ingredient list, so consumers can interpret the risk.

Further, this company has not received an FDA warning to our knowledge.

We consider Nugenix Thermo to be the safer choice, although we don't currently recommend either product.

Winner: Nugenix Thermo

Alli

This over-the-counter (OTC) drug is FDA approved for weight loss.

It's clinically proven to cause substantial weight loss, as we documented in our Alli review article.

While this drug can cause uncomfortable side effects, we consider it to be substantially safer than Truvy, given its clinical backing.

Winner: Alli

Burn Evolved

Contains one ingredient we consider unhealthy at its stated dose, but still a much safer bet than Truvy, given the clear ingredient disclosures.

Winner: Burn Evolved

Conclusion

Truvy was required by the FDA in 2023 to recall 12 different supplement batches due to ingredients that were not approved for use in dietary supplements.

The company also received a warning letter from the FDA six years prior, regarding numerous quality control failures.

At the time of updating this article, the Truvy website fails to publish full ingredient lists on some product pages, which is a consumer safety issue.

In the past, Truvy published ingredient lists for their supplements more clearly, and we identified unhealthy inactive ingredients in each formulation analyzed.

We consider Truvy to be less safe than Nugenix Thermo, Alli and Burn Evolved given the ingredient disclosure issues, and the multiple FDA warnings.
